Hi all, just thought I'd get your opinions on this...

I've come to a point where I need to get a new bass - my first one that I've used to learn on is a no-name (well it'll always be a mystery since it was dirt cheap and already repainted, including the headstock, when I bought it) P-bass copy that I haggled for about 30 quid off a guy near where I live. It plays fairly well but sounds pretty bad. Rather than swap out the pickups I'd rather have something else, and I really like to customise ...

I keep reading about how Westone guitars were budget guitars, but looking at the 1981 UK price list a Thunder 1 bass for example is £124.

http://www.westone.info/cats/81/09.html

I thought £124 would have been a quite a bit of cash in 1981, considering a budget bass these days would be about the same cost. I was only 9 years old in 1981 so I just wondered if anyone older remembered the average UK price of a new standard Fender P-bass in the early 80's as a comparison to the Westone bass ...

I know nothing about these but it seems to be all there. The serial number (84009) is only five digits long, unlike the more usual seven digit system used by Westone, any ideas?

Another nice example, the pickups look original and the locking nut is complete. The control knobs seem to have been replaced with what looks like early Spectrum items, as seen on other Uncle Mats brands. Doesn't say if the trem arm is included.

MATSUMOKU Electric Guitar Project Westone Thunder Japan - £5 Current Bid.

There is a lot of work in this one, but I reckon someone could make a decent guitar out of this.

It was originally a non-active model that's been modified with an aftermarket active circuit. It has a dodgy looking re-finish and some extra switches but it still has all of it's brass parts and it appears to have its original pickups!

It could be a cheap way into Thunder 1 ownership with some elbow grease.

Another Thunder need of a little TLC! There's not a huge amount wrong with it, just needs neck single coil ripping out and a toneful humbucker to replace it. The brass knobs are missing in action but that's nothing new.

Another one that might slip under the radar?

Hello there

I recently bought a Thunder 1A Bass (Black lacquer finish solid body with P-Bass pickup configuration). It's in great condition and all the electrics sre working fine both with and without batteries.

My problem is that although I get a great woody tone from the B/E pickup I'm not getting any definition from the bottom end - it's just very deep. I've tried it through a Marshall practice amp, an Ashdown valve head/Ampeg cab, and a Selmer Treble n Bass 50 SV (valve head) through ...

Just been with my bro' to a local guitar show in nearby Gateshead, and this year and with no job and no GAS tokens I was hoping not to bump into anything to tempt me.

Sods law I walked straight into some Uncle Mats, and the first one I found was a 1981 Walnut coloured Rainbow 1 for £250!!! I began to mumble trying to work out if it was possible to make myself more broke than I am already, and I'm pretty sure my wallet began to smoulder!

Westone Rainbow 1 Electric Guitar - £107 Current Bid.

Stunning Blond finish with a hint of quilt in the maple veneer. Pickups have been changed for TV Jones humbucker sized Filter'Trons, they actually look similar the original Super Twin II pickups. Looks clean apart from the chip in the back of the neck (see last pic) and I think the nut may have been changed. Comes with Hiscox hardcase.

WESTONE THUNDER 1A PROJECT - £50 Current Bid.

A few problems with this one, the first one is the missing brass knob (the active one, poop!). A bigger problem is the active circuit, it's should be on the inside of the backplate but it's missing from the pics and the seller says that someone got halfway through bypassing the active side of the electrics!!!

Could be the basis of a good guitar, just got to decide if you want to rebuild it as an active or go with passive only?

So here we go, volume/ tone ?/ and a knob with B--O--T on it. in passive mode the B--O--T control seems to do nothing, the tone ? adds treble and an increase in volume when at 10, rolling it of back to 1 reduces the treble and the volume giving a bassy sound. with the active swith on ( I assume this to be the one under the B--O--T ...

Westone Prestige 250 Electric Guitar - Buy It Now $1,199 USD

This is a beautiful example of Matsumoku quality with a stunning flame maple top, the only thing thats odd about this one is it's serial number. This has an '86 number but the original model seems to have disappeared around 1984. Our info site mentions HERE - at the bottom of the page - that it may have been reissued around 1986 to '88 and known as the Prestige II ?

Guitar: late 60's or so "Raven" bass. Plain Jane copy of Fender's Jazz bass. Single pup. Nice one-piece maple neck, rosewood fretboard. Sunburst tobacco finish on one-piece mahogany body. Bolt on neck. Back plate reads "Made in Japan" ... very similar to the MIJ inscription on the plate bolted to my 1982 Westone x70.
Greetings from Finland. I just purchased a weird Westone stratocaster clone from a finnish auction site (cost as much as 55 euros ) and I'm wondering if someone would help me identify it's roots. There's no serial number or any other information on the guitar. Just some markings in the neck block. The seller said that it's "at least 20 years old". And judging by the condition (nicely worn etc.) it could be, but is it? And does anyone have a clue about where it has been made in? I got ...

Westone Spectrum guitar bridge.guitar project - £9.99 Buy It Now or make an offer.

This must be of use to someone in here? I think it is a Tekglide II trem, sometimes referred to as a Bendmaster (but not an FT or DLX) in earlier catalogues.

Spectrum SX Single Coil Replacement

The middle p/u on my SX is toast. I went to replace it yesterday - got way into the process and then realized that the cavity does not accept a std single coil shaped like the ones I had lying around. I would like to find an original Magnaflux replacement - so if anyone has one for sale - let me know. Barring that, any suggestions on pickups that will fit in the cavity.

Thanks in advance.

I won this on ebay for £104 and thought i'd show it off.

The ebay description was very limited, it simply said “Westone bass in good condition”

There was only 1 dodgy picture with the listing but I could tell it was an early Thunder by the strapbutton position on top of the horn

Actual ebay pic

It was a bit of a gamble because I’ve seen some Thunder basses on ebay in some horrible states. The seller didn't answer any of my questions but I thought I’d go for it anyway and put ...

Hi everyone, just putting this up as an addition to the Spectrum topic - I'd also like to get my hands on a Thunder bass. Specifically, any of the following would make me rather happy indeed:

Thunder I

Thunder I-A

Thunder II (version 2)

Thunder III (both versions)

Thunder Jet

If anyone is thinking of selling one it'd be nice if you could send a message my way, cheers

This guitar is for sale here in the states at an out of state music shop for me so I cannot take a look in person. I was just curious because the bridge is not correct, it should have a Bendmaster FR double locking trem. This is just a standard single lock trem and there does not appear to be any routing that would be present if there ever was a Bendmaster FR double locking trem installed. The Challenger is only listed with the Bendmaster FR double locking trem as far as I know. Mybe this is ...

Hi all, I'd made a post about the Spectrum over in the technical board as I thought I was getting one, but the guy apparently sold it so I'm a bit gutted now

Anyways, I've really taken a shine to them while I've been learning about them over the last few days, and would still love to have one. Ideally I'd like a Spectrum ST bass in white, a Spectrum DX in white, or failing that maybe a Spectrum GT in black. I don't know why but I love the look of them in white!

I was hoping to have a ...
